Audi Key Fob Cover Guide: 8Y, B9, Q-Series and e-tron

The short answer: Audi uses two main key shapes. Cars on the 8Y and B9 platforms - A3, S3, RS3, A4, A5, Q3, Q5, Q7, Q8 and e-tron from roughly 2020 - carry the flatter key with chrome sides and a squared-off end. Earlier A3, A4, A6, Q5 and Q7 models carry a rounder, thicker fob. Compare the side profile, not the buttons.

The side profile is the tell

From the front both Audi keys look similar: black face, chrome trim, three buttons. Turn the key on its side and the difference is obvious. The newer key is noticeably flatter with a straighter edge; the older one is thicker and more rounded, and sits differently in the hand.

If you are ordering online and only have one key in front of you, photograph it from the side. That single angle answers the question faster than any model chart.

Do the S and RS models get a different key?

No. An RS3 carries the same key body as an A3 of the same generation, so covers are interchangeable. What changes is what people choose: RS and S owners tend to pick contrast stitching in red or grey to echo the interior.

The e-tron and Q-series

Electric and Q-series models follow the same split as the rest of the range by platform generation rather than by body style. A newer Q3 and a newer A3 share a key family; an older Q7 sits with the older group. Again, the side profile tells you which.

Matching an Audi interior

• S line or RS with suede details - Alcantara suede in black or grey, with a red or orange contrast stitch if the seats or wheel carry one.
• Carbon inlays - real 3K carbon rather than printed film. Real weave shifts as you tilt it; printed film looks identical from every angle.
• Leather interior - stitched leather, which darkens and softens where you hold it.

What to check before ordering

• The emergency blade still releases with the cover on.
• Buttons click through the material rather than feeling mushy.
• Edges are stitched, not glued.
• The material is non-conductive - suede, leather and TPU leave the radio alone, metal does not.

Common questions

My car is a 2020. Which key do I have? 2019 to 2021 is exactly the overlap. Do not go by year - look at the side profile.

Will an A3 cover fit my Q5? If both are on the same key generation, usually yes. The photo decides, not the badge.

What about the older flip key with the fold-out blade? That is a third, earlier shape, still common on used A3 and A4 cars. It needs its own cover.

Does a cover interfere with keyless go? Not a suede or leather one - the radio passes through unaffected.
