Which BMW Key Do I Have? F-Series, G-Series and the Display Key

The short answer: hold the key flat in your palm and look at its outline. A rounded rectangle with three buttons in a row is the F-Series key. A wider, flatter, more wedge-shaped body is the G-Series key. A key with a screen on it is the Display Key. Older, thicker fobs with a chrome ring are the E-Series generation.

Almost every wrong key cover order starts the same way: someone looks up their model year instead of their key. BMW changes key hardware mid-generation and does not announce it, so two cars badged identically can carry different fobs. Identify the key, not the car.

The four families

1. E-Series keys (roughly 2004 to 2013)

Thicker and more rounded than anything that came after, usually with a chrome or silver trim ring and a metal blade that slides out of the end. Found on cars like the E90 3 Series, E60 5 Series and E70 X5. If your key feels chunky in the hand rather than flat, this is probably it.

2. The F-Series key (roughly 2011 to 2019)

A flat, rounded rectangle. Three buttons in a vertical row - lock, unlock, boot - with the BMW roundel above them. The emergency blade releases from the bottom edge. This is the key most F20, F22, F30, F32, F10, F15 and F25 owners are holding.

3. The G-Series key (roughly 2018 onwards)

Wider and flatter than the F key, with a more wedge-like profile and the buttons set into a slightly different layout. Side by side the difference is obvious; alone, the giveaway is the width. Found on G20, G22, G30, G05, G06, G07 and G42 cars.

4. The Display Key

Impossible to mistake: it has an LCD touchscreen on the front and charges over USB or on the wireless tray. It was offered on some 5 and 7 Series, X5, X6 and X7 cars, usually as an option. It is much larger than a normal key and needs its own cover - a standard G-Series cover will not fit it.

Chassis codes, with the exceptions that catch people out

As a rule of thumb, F-coded cars carry the F key and G-coded cars carry the G key. Three well-known exceptions break that rule:

• F40 1 Series (2019 onwards) is F-coded but carries the newer key.
• F44 2 Series Gran Coupe - same story.
• F90 M5 (2018 onwards) also uses the newer style rather than the older F key.

This is exactly why we sort covers by key shape and not by model. If the outline matches, it fits, whatever the badge says.

Where to find your chassis code

It is on the sticker in the driver's door jamb, on the VIN plate, and in most BMW apps under vehicle details. But you do not actually need it - the key is in your hand and the photos tell you more than the code does.

Does Comfort Access change anything?

No, not for a cover. Comfort Access keys look the same from the outside as the standard fob of the same generation. The difference is inside. A cover cut for the shape fits either.

Three mistakes we see every week

• Ordering by model year. The changeover years overlap by two or three years depending on the model line.
• Assuming both household keys match. A replacement key ordered years later can be a different generation from the original.
• Forgetting the Display Key exists. If the car was optioned with one, the spare in the drawer is usually a normal key - and they need different covers.

Common questions

Can I tell from the number of buttons? Not reliably. Button count varies by market and options. The outline is the dependable signal.

My key has a red panic button. What does that mean? Usually a North American market key. It does not change the body shape, so the cover for that generation still fits.

Will a cover stop the emergency blade coming out? Not on ours - the release stays accessible and the blade slides out with the cover fitted.

Is there a cover for the Display Key? Yes, but it is a separate product from the standard covers. Check the listing says Display Key or LCD.
