Do Key Fob Covers Block the Signal? What Actually Matters

The short answer: a key fob cover made of Alcantara, suede, leather, silicone or TPU does not block the signal, because none of those materials conduct electricity. Metal and zinc-alloy cases can shorten range. If you actually want the signal blocked, you need a Faraday pouch, which is a different product that stops the key working until you take it out.

Search for this and you get two groups of people who want opposite things. One group is worried a cover will stop their car unlocking. The other is worried about relay theft and wants the signal gone. Google mixes them together, so here they are separated.

Question 1: will a cover shorten my key's range?

A car key talks to the car over radio, typically at 315 MHz in North America and 433 MHz in Europe, with a separate low-frequency link around 125 kHz for keyless entry. Radio passes through non-conductive materials almost untouched. It is reflected and absorbed by conductive ones.

Carbon fiber	Carbon is conductive, so a full wrap can attenuate a little. Most key covers only cover part of the shell and owners rarely notice, but it is not the material to pick if you regularly unlock the car from the far end of a car park.
Zinc alloy, aluminium, steel	This is the real culprit. A metal shell around the antenna is a partial Faraday cage and range drops noticeably.

If your range dropped after fitting a cover and the cover is not metal, check the battery first. Key batteries fade gradually and people usually notice the day something else changed.

Question 2: can a case stop relay theft?

Relay theft works by picking up the low-frequency signal your key emits while it sits in the house and relaying it to a device next to your car. Blocking that needs a full conductive enclosure - a Faraday pouch or a metal tin.

Here is the part that trips people up: a Faraday pouch has to stop the key working. That is the whole point. If your key still unlocks the car while it is inside the pouch, the pouch is not working. So it is a storage product for overnight, not something you carry the key in during the day.

A key fob cover is the opposite product. It protects the key from scratches, drops and pocket wear while keeping it fully usable. The two are not alternatives, and no single product does both jobs.

What about insurance?

Insurers do not generally require a signal-blocking pouch, but several UK insurers ask how the vehicle and its keys are kept overnight after a keyless-entry theft claim. If keyless theft is your concern, a Faraday pouch plus an OBD port lock or a steering lock is the combination that actually changes anything. Check the wording on your own policy rather than relying on a blog - ours included.

Things a cover does not affect

• The emergency key blade. On a well-cut cover it still slides out without removing the cover.
• Button feel. Suede and leather covers are cut around the button pad, so lock, unlock and boot stay pressable.
• Keyless entry sensing. Same physics as the buttons - a non-conductive cover is invisible to the radio.

Common questions

Does a leather key cover block the signal? No. Leather is non-conductive and has no measurable effect on range.

Does a metal key case block the signal? It can reduce range noticeably, depending on how much of the antenna it wraps. This is the main reason we do not make metal covers.

Will tin foil block my key? Wrapped completely and tightly, usually yes - but it tears, it stops working the moment there is a gap, and you cannot tell when it has failed. A proper pouch is a few pounds.

My key stopped working after I fitted a cover. What now? Take the cover off and test. If the range is still poor, replace the battery. If the range comes back, check whether anything metal sits over the antenna end of the fob.
