Range Rover and Land Rover Key Fob Covers: Which Key Fits

Land Rover shares key bodies across its range far more than most people expect. A Velar and a Discovery can carry the same key; a Range Rover and an Evoque of the same age often do too. That is good news - it means fewer shapes to choose between - but it does mean the badge on the bonnet tells you almost nothing about which cover to buy.

The slab key

A thick rounded rectangle, usually finished in black or dark grey with a chrome or satin trim strip, buttons set into the face. It feels solid and slightly heavy in the hand. This is the key across a wide swathe of Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque, Discovery and Discovery Sport cars.

It also picks up scratches on the trim strip quickly, because that strip sits proud of the body and is the first thing to meet a coin or another key.

The newer, slimmer key

Flatter and cleaner, with a simplified button layout and less chrome. Found on more recent cars.

The Activity Key

The waterproof wristband - not a key fob at all, and nothing we make a cover for. If you use one, note that it does not replace the main key for locking purposes on every model, so the fob usually still lives in the car or in a bag.

How to identify yours

  1. Is the key thick and slab-like, or flat and slim?
  2. Is there a chrome or satin strip running around the edge?
  3. How many buttons, and are they flush or raised?

Then compare with the photos in the key fob cover fitment guide. If yours sits between two, send us a photo - Land Rover ran running changes mid-generation and we would rather identify it than have you exchange it.

What a cover does here

Two things, honestly. It stops the trim strip getting chewed, and it gives a heavy key some grip so it does not slide off a car seat or a kitchen counter. It does not make the key waterproof, and it does not stop relay theft - no cover does, whatever you read.

Finishes

Alcantara suede is the most popular here: these are large keys and suede takes the hard edge off them. Carbon fiber suits the Sport and SVR cars. Leather works well on the full-size Range Rover, where it matches the interior rather than contrasting with it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Range Rover key cover fit a Discovery?

Often yes - Land Rover shares key bodies across models. Compare the fitment photo rather than going by model name.

Do you make a cover for the Activity Key?

No. The Activity Key is a waterproof wristband rather than a fob, and it does not need one.

Does a cover make the key waterproof?

No. It protects against scratches and impact, not water.

My key has a chrome strip that is already scratched. Will a cover hide it?

Yes - the cover sits over the trim strip, which is exactly the part that wears first.
