Golf Mk8 Key Cover Guide: GTI, Golf R and What Actually Fits

The short answer: the Golf Mk8 uses a newer, squarer smart key that does not share a cover with the Mk7. GTI, GTD and Golf R use the same key body as a standard Mk8, so one cover fits all three. The same fob also appears on several Skoda and Seat models, which is why a VW cover often fits those cars too.

Mk7 or Mk8?

The Mk7 key (2013 to 2019, including Mk7.5) is a rounded fob with the emergency blade folding out of the end, the classic VW shape people picture. The Mk8 key (2020 onwards) is flatter and squarer, with a different button layout and a different blade release. They are not interchangeable and a Mk7 cover will not stretch onto a Mk8 key.

If your car is a 2019 or 2020, do not go by the year - look at the key. The changeover overlapped by model and market.

Does GTI or Golf R get a different key?

No. Volkswagen does not give the performance models a different key body, so a cover that fits a Golf Life or Style fits a GTI, GTD, GTE or Golf R. The only thing worth choosing differently is the color: GTI owners usually go for a red contrast stitch and Golf R owners for blue or grey.

Several Skoda and Seat models use the same fob body as VW equivalents, which means a cover listed for a Volkswagen key type often fits a Skoda Octavia or a Seat Leon. What to look for in a Golf Mk8 cover

• The blade release stays usable. The Mk8 blade releases differently from the Mk7 - a cover cut for the wrong generation blocks it.
• The buttons are cut around, not covered flat. You should feel the click through the material.
• Stitched edges, not glued. Glued edges peel inside a year of pocket use.
• Non-conductive material. Suede, leather and TPU leave the signal alone. Metal cases are the ones that shorten range.

Does the GTI key have a red badge? Some markets fit a colored insert, but the body shape is the same, so the cover fits either way.
