Ford Key Battery Replacement: Fiesta, Focus, Puma and Kuga (2026)

Worn Ford keyless key fob on a grey car seat next to a new coin cell battery

Your Ford has started showing a key battery warning, or the doors only unlock when you are standing next to them. Changing the battery takes about five minutes and costs a few euros, and you do not need a dealer. The one thing that catches Ford owners out is that two different cell sizes are in common use, so here is how to tell which one you need and how to open each type of key.

The short answer

Ford flip keys usually take a CR2032. Many keyless fobs take a larger CR2450. Ford has changed cells between years and markets, so open the key first and buy the code printed on the battery you remove.

Which Ford key do you have?

The model name will not tell you, because the same car was sold with different keys depending on trim and year. A Fiesta or Focus can have a flip key on a basic trim and a keyless fob on a higher one. Look at the key in your hand instead:

  • Flip key: a metal blade folds out when you press a button. You turn it in an ignition barrel, or use it only for the door on later cars.
  • Keyless fob: no folding blade. A smooth, rounded body with buttons on the face, and a small emergency blade hidden inside. You leave it in your pocket and press a start button.

Which battery does a Ford key take?

Key Commonly found on Usual battery
Flip key Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma, Transit, Ka and Mondeo with a turn or basic start CR2032
Older keyless fob Focus Mk3, Kuga Mk2, Mondeo and similar, roughly 2011 to 2018 CR2032 or CR2450, depending on the fob
Rounded keyless fob Newer Fiesta, Focus Mk4, Puma, Kuga Mk3 Often CR2450
US smart key F-150, Explorer, Edge, Escape and similar Often CR2450, some earlier fobs CR2032

Treat this table as a starting point. We could not confirm every model and year against a Ford source, and a replacement key ordered later can differ from the original. The code on the battery you take out is the only answer that counts, and your owner's manual will confirm it.

The two sizes are not interchangeable. Both are 3 volts, but a CR2450 is 24.5 mm across and a CR2032 is 20 mm, so the wrong one either will not fit or will sit loose without touching the contacts. Buy a known brand such as Panasonic, Varta, Energizer, Duracell or Maxell. Our car key battery guide compares the sizes used across every brand.

How to change the battery in a Ford keyless fob

Hands pulling the metal emergency blade out of a Ford keyless key fob
Start by pulling out the emergency blade. It frees the opening point, and its tip can work as your lever.
  1. Take off any key cover so you can see the seam.
  2. Release the emergency blade. Slide or press the small catch and pull the blade out of the end of the fob.
  3. Find the slot inside the opening the blade came out of, or along the seam next to it.
  4. Twist gently with the blade tip or a small flat screwdriver wrapped in tape. The halves are held by clips, so work slowly and stop if something feels stuck.
  5. Note which way up the battery sits before you touch it. A quick phone photo is enough.
  6. Lift the old cell out with a fingernail or plastic pick and read the code on it.
  7. Fit the new cell the same way round, holding it by the edges so skin grease stays off the contacts.
  8. Press the halves together until they click all the way around, refit the blade and test it at the car.

Once the halves separate there is one coin cell to swap. Note which way up it sits before you lift it.

How to change the battery in a Ford flip key

  1. Fold the blade out so it is out of your way.
  2. Find the small slot on the seam between the two halves of the plastic body.
  3. Insert a small flat screwdriver or a coin and twist. The remote section separates from the blade section.
  4. Open the remote section the same way if the battery is not already visible.
  5. Swap the cell, matching the code and the way up it was fitted.
  6. Snap everything together and test the lock and unlock buttons.

A cloth or some tape over the screwdriver stops it marking the plastic. If the seam will not move, do not lever harder. Look for a second notch, because a snapped clip means the key never closes properly again.

Key cover on? Take it off first

Alcantara and leather covers slide off in a second. Opening the key through a cover bends the cover and can crack the plastic underneath. The technique in our key cover removal guide works on Ford keys too.

Key completely dead? How to get in and start the car

A flat fob does not leave you stranded. The car can still read the key's transponder chip, which needs no battery.

  1. Open the door with the emergency blade. On many Fords the lock barrel sits under a small cap on the driver's door handle. Lever the cap off with the blade, unlock and open the door. The alarm may sound until the car starts.
  2. Start the car using the backup position. Depending on the model this is a marked spot on the steering column or a backup slot in the center console. Hold or place the fob there and press the start button with your foot on the clutch or brake. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot under keyless starting.

On a flip key car, the blade turns the ignition as normal and the car starts even if the remote buttons have stopped working.

New battery and it still does not work?

  • Battery upside down. The most common cause. Open it and check against your photo.
  • Wrong size. A thin or narrow cell can sit loose and miss the contacts. Read the code again.
  • Dead on arrival. Cells from bulk packs are sometimes flat. Try a second one before suspecting the key.
  • Bent contact. A flattened spring contact may need lifting very slightly with a plastic pick.
  • Clips not fully closed. If the halves are not pressed fully home, the cell can lose contact.
  • Weak car battery. If the car itself is struggling, the locks and start system can look like a key fault.
  • Damaged key. After a wash cycle or a hard drop the board can be cracked. A locksmith can test it quickly.

Do you need to reprogram it? Normally no. The pairing is held in memory and does not depend on the battery, so the key should work as soon as it is closed.

While the key is open on the table

Have a look at the plastic. Keys share pockets with coins and phones, and the gloss on a Ford fob wears quickly. Replacing and programming a lost or broken key costs far more than a battery, which is why most of our customers fit a cover. A good cover should not block the signal, as we explain in Do key fob covers block the signal? Choosing between materials? See Alcantara vs leather vs carbon fiber. And if you are shopping for someone else, there are more ideas in our gifts for Ford owners list.

Storing the key well also helps the battery. A keyless fob left close to the car can keep talking to it, so keep it a few meters away. Our guide to relay theft and key covers explains what actually protects a keyless car.

Common questions

What battery does a Ford key fob take?

Flip keys usually take a CR2032 and many keyless fobs take a CR2450, but it varies by model and year. Open the key and buy the code printed on the battery you remove.

Can I use a CR2032 instead of a CR2450?

No. Both are 3 volts, but a CR2032 is narrower and will not make reliable contact in a holder made for a CR2450. Use the size printed on the original cell.

How do I open a Ford key fob?

On a keyless fob, remove the emergency blade and twist its tip or a small flat screwdriver in the slot. On a flip key, fold the blade out and twist a small screwdriver or coin in the slot on the seam.

Do I need to reprogram my Ford key after changing the battery?

Normally no. The pairing does not depend on the battery, so the key should work as soon as you close it. If it does not, check the battery first.

How do I start my Ford if the key battery is dead?

Open the door with the emergency blade, then hold or place the fob at the backup position shown in your owner's manual and press start. On a flip key car, turn the blade in the ignition.

How long does a Ford key battery last?

Typically two to four years. Keyless fobs stored close to the car and keys left in hot places tend to wear out sooner.
